"Breaking the Color Barrier, Holmes County, Mississippi" --- May 8

The presentation, "Breaking the Color Barrier, Holmes County, Mississippi" will be held at 4:30 p.m., on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, in the Kirby Ballroom at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). Rev. Zelpha Montgomery Whatley, a Holmes County, Mississippi community leader who experienced the county's civil rights movement, will join Duluth writers and activists Sue [Lorenzi] Sojourner and Cheryl Reitan.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Center for Genocide, Holocaust, and Human Rights Studies. Co-sponsors include African American Student Services and the Campus Climate Initiative.

The book, Thunder of Freedom: Black Leadership and the Transformation of 1960s Mississippi, by Sue [Lorenzi] Sojourner with Cheryl Reitan, (University Press of Kentucky, 2013) will be available for sale.

Reception to Celebrate the Life and Works of Sue Sojourner --- May 10

The Peace Church Gallery is hosting an exhibit of documentary photography by Sue [Lorenzi] Sojourner from May 1-June 1, 2013. The exhibit images are from the new book Thunder of Freedom: Black Leadership and the Transformation of 1960s Mississippi by Sue with Cheryl Reitan. A reception and book signing will be held at Peace Church at 7 pm on Friday, May 10 in the Fireside Room and Art Gallery. Special guest Rev. Zelpha Montgomery Whatley, a Holmes County, Mississippi community leader who experienced the county's civil rights movement, will join Sojourner and Reitan in saying a few words at the reception.

"The Story of ‘Thunder of Freedom,’ from the Congressional Challenge to the 1967 Elections" with Sue [Lorenzi] Sojourner and Cheryl Reitan. March 18, 5 pm, Polymer Science Auditorium, Room 101, University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg. A book signing will follow the presentation.

March 28, Sue [Lorenzi] Sojourner reads to local school children in Holmes County schools.
